Julie, I am thrilled you had a look at it. I am also thrilled you think she might have benefited from it. Maybe I am being too hard on myself and Second Life for trying the experiment. Do you have any student successes you would be willing to shar...

Hi Chip, I beg to differ with your conclusion that SL was not an effective method of learning for this student. She learned an incredible amount of information about her own culture in a way that she would not have been able to in a standard class...

Hi Chip-
It would be good if UA would purchase an estate. I totally agree with your logic and wisdom about doing in the virtual world what could not be accomplished in the physical...

In all seriousness Chip, thank you for being such an incredible host. The trip would not have been the same without your constant help.

What Chip is doing in SL

This summer, 2009, I employed a talented and motivated high school senior to build an Aleut barabara in Second Life. I was interested in her learning curve for this activity and how much she might gain from the experience.

I had her document the time she spent; time to learn Second Life from scratch, on her own, time to learn about barabaras, time to create the barabara, and how she felt she benefited from the experience.… Continue

Open Sim

It is my understanding Open Sim has all the tools, minus the fees, and no barrier between teen and adult grids as in SL. There are shortcomings, of course, but real advantages to the Open Sim. Does anyone want to comment?

And "Yes" to Wade's suggestion.

IT Support for SL

It would not be that onerous for me if I quit my teaching and other faculty duties to focus entirely on developing SL as an instructional tool. Currently, I am lucky to devote an hour per week to SL. I have the most expertise with SL of anyone at UAS - yes, pretty pathetic.

My Question:
Is it reasonable for me to try and create the UAS presence in SL myself? If not, who or what do I need to assist me?

Ideas, please!

My Alaska avatar is now bald and I don't know how to fix that!

Why are we using Second Life and what do we want from SLED-AK?

I am using Second Life to help my UAS students spread out all over Alaska feel more connected with one another and with me and to give me another teaching and learning tool. I would love to partner with Calluna, aka Heather in this.

I am using Second Life because I want to create a Virtual Alaska for my Alaska Studies course. I want a muskeg people can walk - slog - through. I would like a Tlingit Clan House people can enter and see Northwest Coast art and traditional Northwest coast accouterme… Continue

Prim-Sensor-Sound File

Colleagues!

I wish to endow a prim with the ability to sense an avatar within 2 meter radius which triggers a 10 second sound track. I know this involves a sensor script with some kind of embedded call to the audio file.

Would anyone like to lend me a hand in this endeavor? I'll trade a virtual hot tub for it.
