I heard a rumor that you folks were working in OpenSim. We at NOAA also have an OpenSim grid up and running and have transferred some of the content we developed for Alaska into that environment. Anyone interested in playing?

This summer PWSCC bought 2 islands. One is a homestead to be used for the natural history of PWS. I have put in a lot of work on it. There are no buildings only plants, animals & natural features. I didn't get it done 'enough' to have my natural history students (Biol v104) work on it this year but will next year. However, I will be using their natural history notes from the blog they did as notecards for specific species. I just had my Biol V105 (majors biology) students work through the st…

This summer, 2009, I employed a talented and motivated high school senior to build an Aleut barabara in Second Life. I was interested in her learning curve for this activity and how much she might gain from the experience.
I had her document the time she spent; time to learn Second Life from scratch, on her own, time to learn about barabaras, time to create the barabara, and how she felt she benefited from the experience.…

Who is Seleniris Pearl? I just saw the clan house out on Second Earth 8 and was blown away. Great job! Love the sea otters and spawning salmon too. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Second%20Earth%208/169/22/22/

It is my understanding Open Sim has all the tools, minus the fees, and no barrier between teen and adult grids as in SL. There are shortcomings, of course, but real advantages to the Open Sim. Does anyone want to comment?
And "Yes" to Wade's suggestion.

Hello SLED-Alaska,
I have been sort of away from SL for the summer, but with school starting again I would like to get back together and brainstorm what we as a group would like to accomplish. So if we could list what has been happening, and what we plan on doing, and what would be a good meeting schedule then we can see what the interest is, and what direction we can take.

Seleniris, Talliver & I met on Virtual Alaska and started the initial steps for terraforming, based on Talliver's idea. We flattened everything then started etching the coastline in SE & SC, threw up a few mountains and built a prototype Denali. There is lots of work to do and we hope more people will join us for the next meeting, or terraforming party next Monday.

I am starting this blog for a clearer thread of who is doing what on creation of Virtual Alaska sim. Please add short postings on what your current projects and intentions so that we may all review over time, be alerted to new activities, and get directly with the people with whom we need to coordinate.

Attending: Hackshaven Harford, AK Auxiur (Chip McMillan), Jaece Zapatero, iconolith Taggart, Seleniris Pearl, Talliver Hartnell & Cleo Korda ( I apologize for not knowing FL names of all the avatars-maybe we should have a list somewhere on the ning with this info?)
NOAA has graciously donated an island for the use of SLED-AK as noted in Hackshaven’s post on Virtual Alaska. This meeting focused on to determine how the land would be used. It was agreed that we should ha…

ExitReality homepage
I saw that the ISTE speaker is going to be talking about the 3dweb technology created by ExitReality. I was curious and can't make tonight's talk so I checked it out. It is pretty neat. I like the idea that any webpage can become an island, but I feel something is lacking. What is it that SL has that makes it feel so much more usable?
Is it better navigation, better graphics, more intuitive view? I don't know what it is but every other 3d w…

China's Forbidden City has been recreated as a virtual world in which you can explore and interact with others who are visiting as well. I couldn't believe how enormous was when I visited (virtually). I was a little disappointed that there weren't any people logged in when I visited. I guess you have to bring your own friends if you'd like to chat with someone.
More info on the Virtual Forbidden City web site.…
